 The Temple of the Tooth

     The Temple of the Tooth is the house where the Tooth Relic resides.Today it is located in the Kandy area.

            The Temple of the Tooth is a very important place for the Buddhists as the Tooth Relic of the Buddha is placed here. History has it that the Tooth Relic of Ceylon was taken to various places to protect it from various enemy threats.The main reason for the protection of the Tooth Relic was that the idea that the person holding the Tooth Relic should inherit the kingship of this country was ingrained in the Sri Lankans society. The Tooth Relic was brought to Ceylon in the year   301-328 During the reign of King Kithsiri Meghawarna.

Anuradhapura ( first temple of the tooth)

           The Tooth Relic was first placed in a jewel box in a house called Dhammachakka built by King ll Pathis . From then on it was called "Datadhatu Ghara".

      The first Temple of the Tooth in Sri Lanka is the Temple of the Tooth built by Ven. Mahinda Thera in the center of Anuradhapura.Today, the Temple of the Tooth is known as the crown jewel of Buddhism.
